This week, the third veterinary wellbeing study, which was taken during the height of the pandemic, was rolled out with some very sad news. Ninety-two percent of respondents rated increased stress as one of their top mental health challenges, 88% cited student debt and concerns about the risk of suicide as leading stressors for veterinarians. It is no surprise that the pandemic impacted many veterinarians and clinic staff, including veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, practice managers and client service representatives. Add to that, the percentage of veterinarians with serious psychological distress has increased to 9.7% in 2021 as measured by the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, compared to 6.4% in 2019.
On this episode of the Desk Wench Confessions, Caitlin Palmer gets real with Dr. Stacey Cordivano, an equine veterinarian who is on a mission to bring happiness back to our profession. Dr. Stacey talks about her life and her seven secrets to making your wellbeing a priority.

For female veterinarians who want to specialize in zoological work, a new study on family work and income for diplomates of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) holds both good and bad news with a recent study that was published in Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.. While women in the field don’t seem to suffer from a gender pay gap, many feel that they must give up on having children in order to succeed.
On this episode of Vet Candy IRL, host, Shannon Gregoire meets Dr. Tara Harrison, an associate professor of zoological medicine at North Carolina State University and lead author of the study.
The study showed that when it comes to having a family, respondents’ perception of its effect on career did differ by gender. Seventy-six percent of females and 47% of males reported delaying having children because of their career. Additionally, 65% of females with children felt that having children had a negative effect on their career, compared to 16% of males with children. Finally, 85% of females without children, and 44% of males without children, thought having children would have negatively affected their careers.
What can we do to change this? Start by having the conversation. Listen in to learn more!

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. International Women’s Day is March 8th and the goal is to raise awareness against bias and take action for equality. That’s something that we need a lot of in our profession.
In 2017, for the first time in history, women finally became the majority in the veterinary field. Today, the AVMA says that 2/3 of all veterinarians are exclusively small animal practioners; of these, 63% are female. Women also make up 85% of all veterinary students, while veterinary technicians are about 90% female. Sadly, although women outnumber men in the veterinary field, they are still underrepresented in higher management roles.
This month, we are celebrating Dr. Christine Royal, the AVP of Companion Animal and Equine Business at Merck Animal Health. Dr. Christine is a woman who has taken the reins and proved her worth in a male dominated industry, shaping the world for the women that will come after her. In this issue, you can read more about her journey and how she wants to use her success to elevate others.

On this episode of Desk Wench Confessions, we meet the amazing Dr. Angela Hoffman. Not too many stay-at-home mothers make the transition from caring for four children 24/7 to veterinarian, but Dr. Angela Hoffmann has proven absolutely anything is possible in the world of vet medicine.
At 42 years old and a single mother to four, the agonizing decision on what to do for the future of her family was one of the biggest career choices she made in her life—but she did it. Feeling positively ancient compared to her younger piers in the veterinary industry, she got into veterinary school and made the journey to becoming a vet.
Years down the line, her choice has greatly benefited both her own personal well-being and her family. They now reside in a beautiful Oceanside house, and she owns her own private clinic where she sees a variety of small animals.
Dr. Hoffman is an inspiration because she truly shows that no matter what your personal situation is, the potential is there to realize your dreams and become the person you want to be. When she first joined veterinary school, she was one of the oldest people there, but she was able to overcome this and succeed.
