Vet Candy Magazine: Surgery
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
In this issue, we are talking all about surgery and we are introducing you to New York surgeon, Dr. Philippa Pavia. Dr. Philippa doesn’t believe careers are static, and that turned out to be a good thing when she decided to change things up from an English Literature degree to Veterinary medicine. At first, she worried that she might not do well in school or be accepted due to the fact that she was coming from a non-traditional background.
Fortunately, it worked out. Not only did she fall in love with veterinary medicine, she was confident in the path set before her—to become a veterinary surgeon after completing a residency at NYC’s Animal Medical Center. She realized her dream in 2014, becoming a board-certified surgeon.
In this issue, we also have some other great tips to increase your surgical confidence and to help you lead a healthier lifestyle, including a Ashtanga yoga!

Has anyone ever told you that you weren’t good enough? I asked a former colleague this question many years ago and she told me that her guidance counselor in high school suggested that she should forget about college and go to vocational school instead. Thank goodness she didn’t take his advice. Not only did she go to college and vet school, she completed a PhD in pathology and later became board certified in another specialty. My colleague had gumption!
One of the traits that I admire most is gumption. Gumption is what makes you ignore those that say you can’t do something when you know in your heart that you can. Gumption makes us strive harder and push forward when we are faced with challenges.
In this issue we introduce you to another friend of mine who has a lot of gumption, Dr. Lillie Davis. Growing up in poverty, she was often told that she wasn’t good enough. Despite having limited resources, Dr. Lillie’s courage and resolve helped her overcome her circumstances and rise to become the success she is today.

Alyssa Borden wants you to find your passion in life
Monday Aug 30, 2021
Monday Aug 30, 2021
Burn out is a real, and pervasive problem in the vet industry. People work long hours, often in emotionally charged situations, and often throw a work/life balance out the window. Veterinary technician, Alyssa Borden, knows first hand just how tough this problem can be.
After struggling with the huge burden of hating the job she used to love, Alyssa got the best advice she would ever get in her career—“If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.”
She made the difficult decision to leave the clinic, and to set off on a new adventure instead. This decision lead her to Vetsie, a virtual care clinic that would help her strike a better work life balance. It ended up being a great decision for her. Vetsie allowed her to continue offering care to animals and helping owners in need, without feeling overwhelmed or burned out by her job.

Taking care of pet health is the heart of every clinic. Good pet care needs to be the foundation of every practice, but if it's the only focus the clinic might not be as successful as it could be. Great health care at the expense of customer service can result in high customer turn over, and at best lackluster reviews.
On this episode of Vet Candy IRL, Shannon Gregoire and Tatiana Rogers speak with Dr. Natalie Marks about secrets to happy customers, including ways to make the vaccine visit better.

Vet Candy Magazine special edition: Ophthalmology
Friday Aug 20, 2021
Friday Aug 20, 2021
In this issue of Vet Candy Magazine, it is all about the eyes! As veterinarians, we often faced with some really horrible eye cases, like that inevitable Shih Tzu with an eye prolapse or that bulldog with the nasty melting corneal ulcer. Years ago, the only option for severe cases was enucleation. Now, with the increasing number of specialists, we have an option to refer these cases to specialists who can likely save the eyes. Thank goodness!
According to AVMA 2018 data, there are 453 board certified veterinary ophthalmologists. Our favorite one is Ohio veterinarian, Dr. DJ Haeussler, who graces our cover this month.
Helping veterinarians save eyes is why Vet Candy partnered up with Dr. DJ and Sentrx Animal Care to create a master course in ophthalmology. This free program is RACE and New York State approved for CE and focuses on reinforcing the essential fundamentals of eye care. Whether you are a recent graduate or want to upgrade your skills, this free course if for you! Check it out at myvetcandy.com/eye

Thursday Jul 22, 2021
In this issue of Vet Candy Magazine, we are focusing on the customer experience. A positive customer experience promotes loyalty, helps you retain customers, and encourages brand advocacy. It is important to provide a remarkable experience and make them want to continue doing business with you — customers are your best resource for growing your brand awareness.
We are also introducing you to a man who’s on a mission to make the customer experience amazing at veterinary clinics. Alexandre Contreras VT, C.C.M.T, Inventor, knows first hand that one of the worst veterinary experiences that can happen to a pet is having a nail cut too short and bleed during a nail trim. Not only is the pet upset, the pet owner is as well. That’s why he created a cool new nail clipping tool that keeps that from happening.
